"Hail to the Thief" CD Released

A Compilation of Songs About the 2000 Election

Months in the making, the compilation album

"Hail to the Thief: Songs for the Bush Years"

promises to be a funny, and serious, take on the 2000 election, the right-wing Republican agenda, and of course George “Dubya” Bush. The independent release is available by mail order, and can also be purchased online at www.laborheritage.org.

This 15-song collection features singers and songwriters known to the labor movement and other progressive causes, among them Pittsburgh's Anne Feeney, San Francisco’s Jon Fromer and Francisco Herrera, and both the New York City Labor Chorus and San Francisco's Labor Heritage-Rockin' Solidarity Chorus.

The project was conceived and produced by George Mann and Julius Margolin, members of the New York City Labor Chorus and performers with six CDs of their own music between them. “In a country that prides itself on freedom of expression and democracy, the 2000 election was stolen by the Republicans and their cronies on the Supreme Court,” Margolin said. “We decided to make this album to remind people, and to help organize to take our government back in both the 2002 and 2004 elections.” Numerous reports and studies of Florida’s election results reveal Republican maneuvers to distort the vote count in that state, and many U.S. citizens believe the Supreme Court prevented a Gore victory when it ordered a stop to the hand recounts of thousands of Florida ballots.

After the election, Mann and Margolin got in touch with some of their friends from the labor movement and asked them to contribute songs to a project that was just in the planning stages. As Bush and Cheney proceeded to act as if they had actually won the election, and the nation’s activists began to stir opposition to Bush’s anti-environment, anti-choice, and anti-labor agenda, the songs were shaped and recording commenced. A few songs with common themes were added to the mix, and the result is a bouncy, eclectic collection that pokes fun at Dubya and his agenda. There are song parodies and original works among the CD’s 15 tracks.

Copies of the CD are available for $15 (includes postage and shipping). New York State residents must add $1.15 sales tax. Checks or money orders may be sent to: George Mann, P.O. Box 560, Stony Brook, NY 11790.
